The 5-Day Great Ocean Walk

For Fit, Fast, Confident Walkers

The 5-Day Great Ocean Walk covers the full 104km trail from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles.

You don’t skip sections.
You don’t shorten the experience.
You walk the entire route.

But this itinerary is not for everyone.

Five days is designed for walkers who are fit and comfortable covering consistent distances day after day.

Who the 5-Day Walk Is Really For

This option suits:

  • Fit walkers used to consecutive long days
  • People who have completed multi-day walks before
  • Confident, steady-paced walkers
  • Those comfortable walking around 20km per day
  • Walkers who want to complete the entire trail
  • Those who want to fit their whole vacation over a week’s duration.

It’s particularly popular with people who spend a day travelling down to the start of the walk in Apollo Bay, walk for five solid days, then spend a day travelling home.

What the Daily Walking Actually Looks Like

On average, you’ll walk around 20km per day.

Unlike a 7-day itinerary, the distances don’t vary dramatically. There isn’t a long day followed by a noticeably shorter recovery day.

It’s consistent walking. Most days take approximately 7–8 hours on track, depending on pace and conditions.

We aim for walkers to start walking around 7.30-8.30 am and finish between roughly 3:30 pm and 4:30 pm. That ensures:

  • You’re back safely before dark
  • In the unlikely case of an emergency, everyone is accounted for
  • If old injuries re-surface, a slower-paced walk will still result in a safe arrival time
  • There’s buffer time if the weather shifts
  • There’s time to relax in the late afternoon

If you regularly walk at a steady 4–5km per hour and are comfortable maintaining that pace across consecutive days, five days works well.

Who We Don’t Recommend This For

We don’t recommend the 5-Day walk for:

  • First-time multi-day walkers
  • Walkers who are unsure if they can complete 20km within daylight hours, but their goal is to complete the whole walk
  • Slower-paced walkers
  • People managing injuries that may flare up

Because the days are already covering quite long distances, it’s difficult to “make up” distances later if you shorten one day.

However, you can certainly shorten a stage if needed (so that you are completing fewer kilometres)— but adding distance to another already long day is rarely realistic.

With a 7-day option, there’s more flexibility. With five days, the distances are tighter and more evenly spread.

This walk suits confident, capable walkers who know how they move over consecutive days.

Still See All the Highlights

In five days, completing the entire 104km trail, you will experience:

  • The Wild-Side and the Mild-Side of the Great Ocean Walk
  • Cliff-top ocean views
  • Forest and river crossings
  • Long beach stretches
  • The Cape Otway Lighthouse
  • Rainbow Falls
  • The final walk toward the Twelve Apostles on foot

You’re not missing sections to make it shorter — you’re simply walking them at a steady, purposeful pace.

What You’ll Remember

Five days on the Great Ocean Walk isn’t rushed — but it is purposeful with a ‘fitness’ goal in mind.

What tends to stay with people afterwards isn’t the kilometres. It’s moments like:

  • The fantastic feeling of completing the set walking kilometres, after spending time training for the hiking trail
  • Connecting with your fellow walkers who might need a little encouragement to achieve their walking goal
  • Standing on an exposed headland with nothing but ocean in front of you
  • Walking stretches where you may not see another group for hours
  • Moving between cliffs, beaches and shaded forest in a single day
  • Settling into a simple rhythm of walking, eating, sleeping and repeating
  • Seeing the Twelve Apostles from the track before joining the main lookout (where it is a lot busier with tourists viewing the area by car).

Because you’re covering the full 104km, it feels like a rewarding, adventurous journey — not just a collection of highlights.
