Last updated: 30th January 2026

With a reduced fire risk, Great Otway National Park and Forest Park visitor sites south of Colac-Lavers Hill Road and east of Forrest have reopened.

Where to get updates

This update is here to help you plan confidently, travel safely, and support local businesses at a time when it really matters.

An aerial view of the Great Ocean Road itinerary shows a coastal road running parallel to a sandy beach, with green fields and hills on one side and the ocean on the otherβ€”perfect for planning your 3 days or taking the scenic Great Ocean Road Walk.

Fire Activity, Precautionary Closures & Safety on the Walk

9/1/2026

When a Catastrophic Fire Danger day was declared, Parks Victoria closed the Great Ocean Walk for 24 hours as a precaution.

After reopening, lightning strikes led to some fires starting in the region. These fires are mostly out or under control, however the walk was closed again for the day as a further safety measure while conditions were assessed.

At the request of Parks Victoria, and in consultation with fire management authorities, Mark headed out with the Walk91 buses to help safely evacuate walkers from the Great Ocean Walk while the closure was in place.

A white passenger van labeled "W91 BUS" is parked on a dirt road beside a green, grassy pasture with grazing cows and rolling hillsβ€”a perfect scene for exploring campsites along the Great Ocean Walk.

Because we’re local, with feet on the ground and decades of experience on this trail, we were able to respond quickly when help was needed. Mark has worked on the Great Ocean Walk since its earliest days, and the safety of people on the trail has always been the priority.

We’re incredibly thankful to the CFA and fire management teams, whose efforts helped keep not only the Great Ocean Walk safe, but also local communities and people’s properties.
