Practical advice from local experts who’ve walked the track for 20 years!
The Great Ocean Walk is one of Australia’s most breathtaking long-distance trails — a spectacular 104 km journey from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles. Whether you’re walking the full eight days or just a shorter itinerary, it’s important to prepare well so the experience is enjoyable from start to finish.
Local Insight from Walk91
This guide is written by the Walk91 team, locals based in Apollo Bay who live and work on the Great Ocean Walk. We support walkers on this trail each walking season and share practical, first-hand knowledge to help you plan safely and confidently.
Here are 10 essential, field-tested tips from the local experts at Walk91 to help you walk confidently, comfortably, and at your own perfect pace.
After helping thousands of hikers complete the trail over the past two decades, since the Great Ocean Walk opened — and with our founder Mark having helped build parts of the walk as a Parks Victoria Ranger — we’ve learned exactly what makes a Great Ocean Walk adventure safe, enjoyable, and unforgettable. Because of this, we’ve gathered our most useful advice below. (Once you have finished reading this blog, be sure to check out Part 2!)

10 Top Tips on the Great Ocean Walk
1. Plan for All Weather — Sometimes in the Same Day
Conditions on the Great Ocean Walk change quickly. For example, you may move from a warm beach section into a cool rainforest gully within minutes. In addition, sudden showers are common even on sunny days. Bring layers, waterproofs, and sun protection year-round. As a result, you’ll stay comfortable no matter what the day brings.
Walk91 Tip: We provide a private walk briefing so you’re fully updated on local conditions before you begin.
2. Understand High-Tide Routes and Swell Forecasts
Some sections, including Johanna Beach and Wreck Beach, depend heavily on swell and tides. Therefore, it’s essential to check tide charts and forecasts before you start each day. In many cases, choosing the high-tide alternative routes may be the safer option.
Walk91 Tip: We walk you through this at your safety briefing so you choose the safest route each day.

3. Wear Proper, Worn-In Footwear
Blisters are the number one issue for hikers. Bring:
- A blister kit from day one
- Quality hiking boots
- Merino socks
4. Train Your Legs (Just a Little!)
You’ll walk 10–18 km per day. Even a little preparation makes a big difference. As a result, your body adjusts more easily, and the walk becomes far more enjoyable.
5. Carry Enough Water — Minimum 2 Litres Per Person
There are no shops along the track. Rainwater tanks exist but can run dry and require sterilisation. Always carry enough for the full day.

6. Book Your Accommodation Early
There are no accommodation options on the actual track, except campsites (limited, must be booked). Lodges and cabins are near — not on — the trail.
Walk91 Tip: We arrange accommodation, luggage transfers, shuttles, meals, and maps to save you time and stress.

7. Stay Safe — Phone Signal Is Limited
- EPIRB or PLB
- Telstra phone
- First aid kit
- Snake awareness
- Trip intentions left with someone
Walk91 Tip: We provide the EPIRB/PLB and can supply a Telstra phone if needed.
8. Pack Smart — But Keep it Light
Your pack should not be heavy unless you’re camping.
Suggested essentials:
- Waterproof jacket
- Hat and long-sleeved sun shirt
- Snacks & lunch
- Camera/phone
- First aid
- Refillable water containers
- Lightweight warm layers
If you choose a Walk91 self-guided tour, your luggage is transferred daily so you walk pack-free.

9. Follow the Track Markers
The track is well signed with yellow arrows and Parks Victoria posts. Walking east to west (as designed) means fewer people walking toward you and better views.
10. Slow Down & Enjoy the Moments
From koalas at Cape Otway to the rugged cliffs of Milanesia and the first glimpse of the Apostles — the journey is full of quiet magic. Take breaks, look around, and soak it all in.
