We heard about Walk 91 in a booklet sent to us by the tourist office at Apollo Bay after we enquired about the Great Ocean Walk.
It was all fine the way that our itinerary was planned. We appreciated being able to do Shelley Beach to Marengo as a separate section of the Great Ocean Walk, the afternoon before Day 1.
Plenty of information was received and the accommodation. All three were excellent. We found it easy to find the meeting spots each day. The walk was challenging. Good to see that a new high tide route will soon be available at Wreck Beach because it was a ‘bummer’ having to walk Old Coach Rd. Mud patches were a trial but these will no doubt be addressed in time. Our sense of achievement came on reaching Moonlight Head.
We experienced variable weather. One of our highlights was Johanna Beach with a cold head wind. Started the beach walk in sunshine, finished it having been through a hail shower and even stronger wind. Not something we would choose to do, but so invigorating after the event. Parks Victoria should upgrade the Great Ocean Walk track over time. The steep descent to Johanna Beach would be much safer with steps.
