We really enjoyed the Walk and were very pleased with the accommodation & arrangements, even though we were pretty tired after 6 days.
We heard of you on the internet…the accommodation was great.
Beautiful scenery, lots of great plant life and wild life. Not too tough, but must admit that we needed a rest after day 6, as the legs & feet were buggered.
Parks Victoria could provide more consistent signage along the whole route.
Our tips are…. Take your time to look at the scenery, plant life & wild life and don’t just try to get to your destination within the recommended time. Take clothing for all weather conditions (especially in spring when it changes a lot) and be aware that the beach walking can be tough due to soft sand. Finally, be aware that Day 6 can be tougher than it looks, due to the toughness of Day 5 and the distance to cover on Day 6.
Isabella & I had a great time on our walk. The terrain was probably a little more challenging than expected giving us some decent blisters 🙂 but all is all it was a positive experience. Most importantly for us, we used this as a fundraising event for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and we raised over $5,500 which helped us keep going when we were feeling a little tired and sore!
The itinerary was wonderful. We ran into many other people who had dramas re their accommodation, or pick up/drop off etc as they tried to do this independently. It made us very pleased to be walking with Walk 91! All of the accommodation providers went above and beyond to make our stay comfortable.
All accommodation was very suitable and would stay in any of them again. Terrain was difficult… it did not challenge our fitness but we struggled at times with sore feet & knees. The only thing extra we could have done to prepare was probably some soft sand trekking.
The track was very well signed until the last day. We definitely benefited from getting fit prior to the walk. Make sure you wear in your walking shoes. We took fairly well worn in hiking boots, however after the first day we ended up resorting to our sneakers as we felt these were more comfortable… so I guess take spare shoes just in case.
Thank you for your assistance,
Thanks for the wonderful time on the Great Ocean Walk. And thank-you also for your team’s hard work. Jared and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip. We were lucky enough to only see a couple of other walkers on the track, and the views were even better when we didn’t have to share them!
We heard about Walk 91 on the internet, through a google search. The itinerary and walking package were great.
The B&B was a highlight of our trip. They were gracious and informative hosts. We felt very welcome and the home cooking was fantastic. Homemade bread!
The meeting spots were easy to find.
The walk was absolutely stunning. The blisters, aches, and pains were definately worth it for the views.
Parks Victoria did a wonderful job. The distances were well marked, as were the times up until about Aire River. The track was almost impossible to lose.
Our tips: watch out for the stinging nettle on the 3rd day! We were wearing shorts and didn’t realise there was nettle on the track. Only a few minor stings, but a nasty surprise.
Thanks again, and best of luck in the future.
We were thinking of spending a day or two driving on the GOR as part of a trip to Melbourne. In searching the web came across the GOW & Walk 91 website & decided to do that.We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and it was all plain sailing.
The walk was enjoyable. Relaxing. Lots of fun. Very well sign posted.
We started on a Sunday. Apart from a brief shower on Wednesday the only wet day was Thursday. Nonetheless there was plenty of mud… so be prepared.
We had a great time. Already recommended it to several people & will continue to do so.
The driver was very efficient & friendly. It was a pleasure to be in their company each morning & afternoon.
They are in the people business and make the effort to be nice to people….it is surprising how many people in the people business seem to forget this!
Spoke about the walk to some family & friends in Melbourne… surprising how little they knew about it. Perhaps GOW could be better promoted in its own back yard.
Thank you for arranging a guide to walk with Miranda. We really enjoyed the whole experience. It was great for Mia coming from Germany to see such a beautiful part of Australia.
We heard of Walk91 on the internet.
The accommodation providers were fantastic, really friendly, lovely places…
Our tips would be to take a small towel for river crossings.
Thank you for going above and beyond for us. We really did have a fantastic time doing our walk.
Take care and thanks again!
Thanks for the great support on our walk!
We loved the walk ,everything about it.
We saw Walk 91 advertised in a walking magazine then liked the range of accommodation options and catering options available.
The cabin at the caravan park was very well equipped with a comfy bed and cooking utensils. It was clean and warm.
The B and B was a lovely treat as well. Our hosts treated us like royalty. Couldn’t have asked for more.
We found the walk quite varied in the terrain covered which meant a great variety of plants and animals along the way.
The meeting spots were easy to find and ample time was allowed for each stage. At times too much time. Even the hard day was filled with magnificent views as we topped each hill. Loved it.
We did our walk early in the season and there were quite a few trees across the path. I do assume they go through at some stage to clear them.
We were extremely pleased to do all but one of the beach walk options. If other walkers get to choice ,I would pick a time when the low tide is early to mid morning so beach walks can be done.
Loved the whole experience, track was easy to follow and the notes were a great help.
We first heard about Walk 91 on the internet. We liked your website and the look of your tour better than any of the others.
The way that the itinerary was planned was excellent. It was good having the longest day first.
You did a very good job. It was really good having the maps, notes etc. so long before we actually did the walk. We really did study them carefully before we left NZ. My only complaint is about the phone; it was a real saga getting registered with Telstra – I’d have willingly paid you the $30 we had to pay for the sim card and registering if you could have lent us a phone for the duration of the walk. It was great having the epirb, even greater that we didn’t have to use it!
All the accommodation was excellent and the people very friendly and helpful. I loved the Eco Lodge especially…
The meeting spots were easy to find. The driver was very helpful and specific about where to meet him. Also the Parks Victoria map is so good that it was easy to find the meeting places.
We loved the Great Ocean Walk. It was long, but nothing was too difficult. I was amazed at the change in vegetation along the way – I had always thought that gum trees were gum trees, but there is so much variety. Not seeing a snake was a bonus!
I realise that it is a young walk and that improvements are being made all the time. On the last 2 days when it was wet, I found that some of the wooden boardwalk a bit slippery as I went downhill. On one section there were small boards nailed across the boardwalk which were a great help. I think that the section between Johanna campsite and Milanesia Gate is to be re-routed; personally I’d be quite sorry as I enjoyed going through the farmland. The map was really excellent.
My tips for future walkers would be: Wear boots, gaiters, take warm clothes as well as light ones and have a good raincoat.
You may remember that one of our proposed party broke her ankle about 5 weeks before our walk was to start (she was replaced by my older sister). Once she has recovered I hope to persuade her to do the walk with me. If we do come again we will certainly book with you. Thank you for such a great holiday.
We heard of Walk91 on the internet and liked the web site.
We thought our itinerary was ideal with not too much each day.All the accommodation providers were excellent and most welcoming and helpful.
Our driver gave us good instructions regarding the meeting spots each day, so there was no problem. The instructions for the day we walked to the accommodation was quite clear.
We liked the variety of the Great Ocean Walk and realise it is a relatively young walk and having improvements all the time. Maybe a few more signs giving actual distances would be good, but they are doing a great job in any case.
Our tips for future walkers would be… Getting the telephone card in Australia was a big issue for us – so much red tape and forms. (Walk 91s comment: Walk91 can now provide a mobile phone for oversea visitors if required.)
We were so lucky with the weather for the first four days and even the last two were not bad – we did not expect it to be so hot! We would certainly recommend Walk 91 to our friends.
